Authorities released body camera video of a Texas fugitive accused of shooting a Whitfield County sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop. The deputy survived thanks to his ballistic vest.

Authorities released the body camera video of a Texas fugitive who shot a sheriff’s deputy in northwest Georgia during a traffic stop Sunday.

The video, obtained by Channel 2 Action News, shows the terrifying moment when Whitfield County sheriff’s Deputy Darrell Hackney approaches the car with the two men inside and is shot when he reaches the driver’s-side window.

The face of the driver, Dalton Potter, 29, can clearly be seen as it is illuminated by the deputy’s flashlight, then he appears to fire a handgun from a low position at his right side. Potter crashed the vehicle shortly after, and it was found near the county line on I-75 South, authorities said. He remains at large.

“Deputy Hackney was struck by gunfire, but his ballistic vest prevented serious injury,” GBI Special Agent in Charge Joe Montgomery said. Hackney and another deputy returned fire, but Potter sped away on I-75, Montgomery added.

The second suspect in the vehicle, Jonathan Hosmer, 47, was arrested after he was found in the woods off Henry Owens Road.

Anyone with information on the case or Potter’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office at 706-370-4900.

The investigation into the shooting is the 67th of its kind that the GBI has opened in 2020.
