One man was in custody and another on the run after the two allegedly stole a Mercedes at the Atlanta airport and crashed it Monday night, according to police.
The silver Mercedes was a Hertz rental car that had the keys inside, Officer Ralph Woolfolk with Atlanta police said. Officers who responded to the stolen vehicle call at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport alerted other officers, who spotted the car in southwest Atlanta, he said.
When the duo inside the car crashed it on West Whitehall Street, both suspects started running, according to police. Witnesses pointed officers to the direction the two men ran, and the officers pursued both suspects on foot, Woolfolk said.
One suspect, Devon Henderson, 18, of Atlanta, was arrested behind a home, Woolfolk said. A second suspect, whose description was not available, was able to escape, according to police.
Henderson was returned late Monday to the Fulton County jail, where he has spent time after three previous arrests since August, booking records showed. He was charged with robbery on Dec. 24 and in August was charged with theft by taking, entering automobile and trespassing, records showed. Henderson also was charged with battery in August.
While responding to the crashed stolen car, another Atlanta officer was involved in a wreck on Lillian Avenue, Woolfolk said. No details on that wreck were available late Monday, but no injuries were reported.
