DeKalb County police are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that shut down part of I-285 for several hours early Monday morning.

Officers responded to the crash around 3 a.m. in the southbound lanes just past Memorial Drive, police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A man was hit and killed on the highway near the Indian Creek MARTA bridge.

It was not known why the man was in the road or what caused the wreck, Vincent said. He has not been identified, and no other details were available Monday afternoon.

The investigation shut down the inner loop of the Perimeter for about three hours before authorities cleared the scene shortly before 6 a.m. During the closure, traffic was being forced off the interstate at Memorial Drive.
