As rains moved east out of metro Atlanta, but showers could come back.

Widespread showers hit parts of the area and North Georgia about 4 p.m. Tuesday and managed to bring traffic to a near standstill.

Rain was reported in Fulton, DeKalb and Gwinnett counties, but the heaviest was south of the metro area, Channel 2 Action News Chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

Downpours were also reported in LaGrange and Newnan and lightning strikes were seen between Conyers and McDonough, Burns said.

A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for parts of Meriweather, Troup and Harris counties.

“One thing I want to caution you about, with the moisture in the air, we could see widespread fog after midnight,” Burns said.

According to the latest forecast, most of North Georgia saw at least 1 inch of rainfall.

Meteorologists said drivers should beware of downed tree limbs and heavy pooling on roadways. Earlier, the downpour brought traffic to a halt.
