LIBYA ATTACKS
Let’s honor those who work in embassies
Mitt Romney’s response to the recent attacks in Libya and Cairo is not just shameful, but shows ignorance and a glaring lack of effective, thoughtful leadership. U.S. embassies are complicated (and often dangerous) places. I say that after having worked in one. We need to honor those brave enough to serve in our embassies by showing support and reverence — and not rushing to judgement when our president is managing a situation.

FREE SPEECH
We need to stand up for what we believe
The United States government must stop apologizing for its citizens’ exercise of free speech. I might find someone’s political and religious beliefs abhorrent, but I will defend to the full extent of my ability their right to express them. Free speech is a core American value. If the Egyptian government is unwilling to provide security at our embassy in Cairo, as it is obligated to do, then we should close our embassy and the Egyptian embassy in Washington. We need to stand up for what we believe.

WOMEN VOTERS
Letter writer takes a lot for granted
I don’t know where a recent letter writer gets her statistics (“Majority of women trust the president, Readers write, Opinion, Sept. 13), but may I inform her that this woman most assuredly does not support the president? I do not trust him, either. She is taking a lot for granted in her statements.
Yes, I am concerned about the economy (and many other things she has no way of knowing about).

ELECTION 2012
Both candidates discredit themselves
Now would be a perfect time to have a third-party choice. Both candidates for the nation’s highest office are working hard to discredit themselves. We must figure out a way to stop sending the same political hacks to govern the country and to send to Congress people who understand how to spend our tax money wisely. We have in Congress people who pledged not to raise taxes.
Even I (a retiree living on Social Security) understand adjustments need to be made to take care of changing needs. Govern for the good of the whole country — not just to get re-elected.

HUMAN RIGHTS
Pitts’ commentary couldn’t be truer
As I read the Leonard Pitts commentary on human rights (“On chicken sandwiches, pro football and rights,” Opinion, Sept. 13), I found myself agreeing with most of what he was saying, as I often do. However, this line jumped out at me: “Every revolution has its dead-enders who bring up the rear, fighting for the lost cause.” Truer words have never been written.
