PUBLIC SPENDING: Spendthrift officials victimize taxpayers

In just one issue of the AJC (Aug. 12), there are two headlines regarding excessive spending and government entities: “Posh training for tax officials” (News) and “Lobbyists hit Atlanta gathering” (News).

Concerning the first article, it would be comical, if it were not so true, that officials take off to posh resorts at our expense to “teach” tax collectors how to more efficiently collect taxes. The second article concerns our legislators’ spending of our tax money, and the outpouring from lobbyists who expect to profit from their gifts.

Many years ago, my husband was a school principal. He would have been fired if he had accepted even the smallest token from a vendor. Thus, the school system could legitimately accept bids from vendors to get the best price on goods, and save the taxpayers money. Gone are those “good old days” — and the taxpayers are the victims.

JUSTICE: Judge was wrong to change baby’s name

It was shocking to read the article, “Tenn. judge changes infant’s name from ‘Messiah’” (ajc.com, Aug. 11). While the judge has every right to stick to her belief system, in a country based on freedom of religion, it sounds unfair for her to dictate it to others — especially those coming to her court to seek justice.

In reading the parent’s comments, it is clear that the intention to name this infant has neither religious motivation, nor do the parents want to convey that he is the much-awaited Messiah (which many believe to be Jesus Christ). I hope that the court will do the right thing, and give these parents the right to choose their son’s name, whatever they may choose.

FOREIGN POLICY: Obama is outmatched by Russian strongman

The current outrage about Russia offering asylum to Edward Snowden truly misses the point.

This is not about snubbing the American people; it is about Vladimir Putin recognizing Barack Obama for the eunuch that he has proven himself to be.

When Obama offered that in his second term, he would have more flexibility, he basically offered Putin total submission. Putin is no fool; he will take it all.

VETERANS CARE: Failed policies make martyrs of soldiers

I am a veteran approaching my 86th birthday. I have yet to switch to VA medical care. I registered some years ago, but after some recent visits and attempted visits to the Clairmont Road facility, I think I will continue with Medicare and my expensive “Medigap” insurance.

What we have today is an overloaded population of Vietnam, Gulf War and other preemptive war vets — all martyrs to failed policies.
