CLAYTON COUNTY

Hill’s re-election not a government problem

Regarding “Clayton residents torn over Hill win” (Metro, Aug. 25), the reporter writes a good piece about the new sheriff of Clayton County, but fails to draw out the real story when she quotes a Hampton resident who stated, “It just doesn’t set a positive light on the county government as a whole.” Hill’s re-election is not a problem with the government; it’s a problem with the people who live in Clayton County – and that is a much more serious illness.

WOMEN’S RIGHTS

Present political dialogue is appalling

As a young student, I learned the definition of the word “rape” (the act of taking by force). As one who has voted Republican as often as Democratic, I am appalled with the present political dialogue regarding women’s rights. In my judgment, when a woman is required to bear a child, she is relegated to the status of a brood animal. Surely, our aspirations for the human race have progressed beyond this sort of reasoning. I am an elderly, white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant who is looking forward to expressing these sentiments on election day.

DOPING

Lance Armstrong case doesn’t reveal much

Maybe Lance Armstrong doped and maybe he didn’t. Someone needs to tell me why I should care. If he did, it can only matter if there are competitors who didn’t. What evidence do we have of that — that they passed their drug tests (just like Armstrong)?

Furthermore, how is doping different than any other edge? You can have an edge in coaching or training or nutrition, so — why not in chemistry? I say that we should permit doping, level the playing field and stop wasting effort and attention on an indefensible distinction.

GOOD DEED

Thanks to neighbor, our dog was saved

We have the greatest (and best) neighbor in the world: David White. A few weeks ago, my wife was walking our dog, and the dog accidentally fell into large drain culvert. I immediately got my neighbor (David), and he single-handedly saved our dog. David lifted off a very heavy sewer cover, climbed down and retrieved our dog. Thank you, David.

ECONOMY

Interdependence creates prosperity

Instead of blaming others for the condition of the economy (or one’s personal prosperity), our efforts would be much better put into generosity. This is the true cause of “economic success”: that everyone is provided for in terms of their basic needs for food, shelter, clothes and medicine. The truth of our interdependence is what creates a truly prosperous economy.
