Alcohol detectors can save motorists’ lives
Regarding “Alcohol detectors should be mandatory” (Metro, July 8), amen, Mark Arum.
I so agree that something must be done as soon as possible to prevent more needless deaths due to drinking and driving — and it must be done before drivers get on the road!
Since the impaired driver obviously cannot make a wise decision, the alcohol detector device could be the life-saver we have all been waiting for. Drinkers will continue to make stupid decisions, thinking only about themselves, so other measures must be taken to prevent more fatalities. What can we all do to help make this happen?

Use National Guard to protect our schools
I recently read “Arming teachers hits snag” (News, July 8).
If there is clear and present danger to school children, a simple solution already exists: Deploy National Guard forces.
Guard forces are already trained, and under the control of state governors. No new laws or funds would be required. Deploying Guard forces to deal with threats would buy society time to better understand the violence plaguing schools and other public places, so that more enduring solutions could be found.

Plane crash highlights flight attendants’ role
In light of the recent plane crash in San Francisco, perhaps the passengers who are dismissive of flight attendants, and consider them someone who just serves beverages, will understand that the intensive and recurrent training they receive is what will make a difference in directing passengers off the aircraft during an emergency.

Conservative positions hinder GOP outreach
According to “Deal says outreach by GOP essential” (Metro, July 7), Gov. Nathan Deal thinks that the GOP should succeed in its outreach efforts because of changes he made in the criminal justice system, and Republican support for charter schools.
Gov. Deal ignores other conservative positions, like the rejection of climate change science; the war against women’s health; the refusal to expand Medicaid due to cost concerns (while throwing around tax breaks to corporations without any requirement of job creation); the willingness to cut unemployment benefits during the Great Recession; the passage of voting restrictions; the demonizing of immigrants, and the coddling of the tea party and their agenda.
Looking at positions like these should make everyone wonder why anyone would support the GOP.
