Drawing in poor taste after fatal train wreck

Out of respect to all of the innocent victims killed during the train accident in Spain, the recent cartoon from Mike Luckovich which featured the quote, “It’s a train wreck” was in poor taste, and was very inappropriate (Opinion, July 25).

Though the accompanying opinion pieces appear under “Balanced Views,” maybe the category should be changed to “Disrespectful Views” instead? This was very sad, coming from such a talented cartoonist.

POLITICS

Campaign donations are sad commentary

Regarding “Deal’s supporters flood PAC with cash” (News, July 26), the listing of the companies and individuals giving to Governor Deal’s political campaign is a sad commentary on our political process.

It is increasingly apparent that the votes cast at election time have already been bought before the public enters the voting booth.

ZIMMERMAN TRIAL

‘Not guilty’ shouldn’t be taken as ‘innocent’

I am well aware of the not-guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman trial. However, as we all know, such a verdict does not necessarily mean “innocent.” In the Zimmerman case, he walked because of an ill-advised law enacted by the Republican Florida legislature, and not because of his innocence. I’m convinced that George Zimmerman got away with murder.

Should he be left alone? Maybe — but if some choose to ridicule and berate him for the rest of his life, he’s still getting a sweetheart of a deal.

BLACK CULTURE

Family life healthier before ‘Great Society’

President Obama, Eric Holder, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, et al lack honesty. They are simply merchants of racial politics.

The value of our young black men is determined by (and reflected from inside) that culture, through the lack of good family examples, direction and support before age 20. Seventy percent of single-parent households tend toward poverty. Black families, and thus the community, were healthier before President Johnson’s Great Society. The trillions of dollars spent to erase poverty have resulted in the most expensive “war” ever, with continuing downward results after 50 years.

Millions of unmarried black men call themselves fathers. It takes more than the act of procreation to make someone a father. If this description fits, shame on you — and shame on the women who consent to such a relationship.

TAX POLICY

‘Inexcusable’ abuse is now just a distraction

Perhaps you could explain to me why earlier this year, President Obama said that the IRS abusing its power against conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status was inexcusable — but now, it’s all a distraction, and a phony scandal.

Color me curious.
