Mike Luckovich’s favorite cartoons of 2013
April 9
As the CRCT cheating trials were starting, it seemed so much of the scandal is based on erasing answers and, you know, the correct answer just being written in. I just played around with that thought a little bit and ended up with this cartoon.

Immediately after the Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act decision came down, states, particularly in the South, seemed to have come down harder and tried to restrict voting in various ways. I just thought it worked in a cartoon to have Justice Thomas, an African-American and Justice Sotomayor, a Latina, having to show proper ID before being allowed to vote on court matters.

I’m really miffed at Gov. Deal. Under Obamacare, the feds are going to, for the first years, pick up 100 percent of the tab for expanding Medicaid. And pay 90 percent after that. But, to prove a political point, he’s willing to forego all of that. That is just so cruel.

“Weekend at Bernie’s” was a movie from the late ‘80s. I went around in the newsroom and asked how many people remembered the movie. I even showed it to some of the younger people here. It’s the kind of movie most people remembered. I went back and looked at the movie poster, and drew this one. I thought it worked – the Tea Party pretty much up until recently kind of controlled John Boehner.

Both the Braves and the Falcons had very disappointing seasons, so I just got to thinking about the retractable roof on the new Falcons stadium. And I started thinking about what, well, what else is retractable, and you know, a trash can has a retractable roof in its own way. I just thought that was a way to show the disappointment of the season.

I just like this particular cartoon. You’ve got this watchdog who’s on duty, but he’s actually looking through the window at this American couple. I just like that way of making the broader point.

The organization popularly known as the Georgia ethics commission really is a joke now. It really is embarrassing. And I hope – and I know this is probably not going to happen – I wish some responsible politicians would really give this watchdog some teeth.

As far as getting to the new Braves stadium planned for Cobb County, I just think it’s really going to be a mess without MARTA, since that’s how so many people got to games anyway. There were traffic issues around the new stadium site already. Add in lots of Braves fans heading out there, and on game nights, that’s just going to be terrible.
