1. President, first lady heading to Texas
President Donald Trump will be traveling to Texas on Tuesday to survey damage from Hurricane Harvey. First lady Melania Trump will accompany the president on the trip.

2. FEMA head asks for volunteers
The head of FEMA, Brock Long, is asking for volunteers to help Texas recover from Hurricane Harvey. Long, who was the school safety coordinator for the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, is urging individuals and organizations to check the website www.nvoad.org or call 1-800-621-FEMA to offer help.

3. Is Illinois a sanctuary state?
A new law signed by Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner would put limits on the state's cooperation with federal immigration officials, according to a story from Fox News. The law – called the Illinois TRUST Act – prohibits state and local officials from holding anyone solely on the basis of a federal immigration detainer. The only exception would be if federal officials have a criminal warrant for the person's arrest. 

4. Trump Organization exec asked Kremlin for help on business deal
The New York Times is reporting that a Trump attorney who is a vice president in the Trump Organization asked an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin for help on a business deal. According to the story, Michael Cohen emailed Dmitry Peskov, a press aide for the Kremlin, asking for help during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. 

5. North Korea launches missile that flies over Japan
The United States is weighing options in response to North Korea's launching of a mid-range ballistic missile that flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean. According to the Associated Press, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile traveled around 1,677 miles. It flew as high as 341 miles and traveled over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

6. Amendment aimed at de-funding Mueller's investigation after a time
Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), introduced a provision in the government spending package that would end funding for special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into any possible Trump campaign ties to Russia. The amendment calls for funds to be cut off six months after the passage of the bill. The House takes up the bill to fund the government next week.
