Lightning hit the home of Arthur and Rosemary Schneider, sparking a fire.
Rosemary, who has dementia and Parkinson’s, was "in a wheelchair in our bedroom, which is far into the house," Arthur said.
After 69 years or marriage, he had no intention of leaving her inside.
However, there were more obstacles to overcome.
When Arthur got Rosemary to the porch, he couldn't get her down the stairs. Daughter Bernadette Schneider Such told ABC News her father "dropped his cane and ran to the neighbor's house, which is at least the length of a football field."
Such was amazed he made it. "I guess God gives us a little strength when we need it," Arthur said.
The neighbor managed to help get Rosemary's wheelchair off the porch and away from the house just as firefighters arrived.
Such says the rescue was vital because her parents “couldn’t live without each other." Arthur is glad everyone is OK but brushes aside praise, saying, "I don't see anything outstanding that I did." The Schneiders' nine children, 21 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren might just disagree.
