10-year old grows out hair to donate to those with cancer
Thomas Moore's stunning, curly locks of hair have been two years in the making.
BuzzFeed News reported that just before Thomas turned 8, he decided to grow out his hair.
WRC-TV reported that the Maryland fifth-grader saw his mother, Angie Pulos, watching a video on Facebook about a 5-year-old girl named Kyssi Andrews, who lost all her hair during her cancer battle. Pulos explained cancer to Thomas and that chemotherapy treatment can make someone's hair fall out.
And from there, Thomas wanted to do something to help and decided to grow his hair out so a wig could be made from it.
"It started off just fine when his hair was shorter," his aunt, Amber Ray, told BuzzFeed News. "But as the Afro grew, they had to cornrow it to keep it nice and tame."
But Thomas, who has a sensitive scalp, came close to giving up when his hair got longer and had to be braided. "They had to refocus on the reason for growing it," Ray said.
Two years later, on Sept. 10, he cut his hair.
Ray proudly shared the moment on Twitter. It was retweeted over 60,000 times.
Pulos found a hair salon that specialized in processing African-American hair for wigs, where Thomas cut his hair for a bigger cause.
"It's tailbone length, so he doesn't even try and it grows," Pulos said. "So I think it's really fantastic that he felt like he could do something so selfless to help someone else so much."
Thomas told WRC-TV that although he was nervous about going back to school with shorter hair, he was happy he stuck with his goal and helped others in need.
Thomas donated enough hair to make three wigs.
