KFMB reported that the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado saw the boy walking on an off-ramp of Interstate 15 in City Heights, California. According to the station, the male driver was driving up the ramp and hit his brakes, veering the truck to the left in attempt to avoid hitting the boy, but he was clipped.

Doerr said the toddler was taken to a San Diego children’s hospital with major injuries.

It is not known how the boy managed to wander onto the highway, KNSD reported.

CHP is investigating the crash. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

Six soldiers were honored, each receiving Meritorious Service Medals, Thursday for heroic actions responding to the shooting at Fort Stewart. “One of the things I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers — under stress and under trauma and under fire — absolutely saved lives from being lost,” U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told reporters as the six soldiers stood near him Thursday. “They are everything that is good about this nation.” (Hyosub Shin/AJC)
