A woman was bitten by an apparent great white shark multiple times Sunday off the California coast, according to CBS Los Angeles.

A portion of Corona del Mar State Beach was evacuated after the incident occurred around 4:17 p.m., according to KTLA.

"A police helicoptor assisted in the evacuation effort and also in the search of the water to try and determine what type of anial bit the victim,"according to a news release from the city of Newport Beach.

A rescue boat met the woman, who has not been identified, and brought her back to shore.

She is conscious and awake, according to CBS Los Angeles. She has multiple serious injuries to her torso and shoulder but is expected to survive, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Her wounds are consistent with signs of shark bites but officials are waiting officials confirmation, Brent Jacobsen, battalion chief with Newport Beach Fire Department, told KTLA.
