Police car windows were shattered, another patrol car was burned and a gas station was set on fire after a protest turned violent Saturday night in the wake of an officer-involved shooting earlier in the afternoon.
Firefighters could not get close enough to contain the fire at the gas station because of gunfire, police said.
A police officer was struck in the head with a brick that was thrown through a window, police said. The officer was being treated a hospital.
Reporters and photographers were also chased with one reporter being shoved to the ground and punched, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
About 100 people had gathered about a block from where a 23-year old man was shot by a six-year police veteran. The 24-year-old officer fatally shot the suspect during a foot chase. The suspect was armed with a handgun that had been stolen during a burglary in March. Some 500 rounds of ammunition were also taken, police said.
It wasn't immediately clear if the suspect pointed the gun or shot at the officer Milwaukee Police Assistant Chief Bill Jessup told the Journal-Sentinel.
The violence started shortly after a woman who said she was related to the dead man asked people to leave the area, according to the Journal-Sentinel.
"We don't want anyone else to go to jail or get hurt," she told the crowd, according to the Journal-Sentinel.
