Two Indian River County sheriff's deputies are being called heroes after saving a woman from a burning car Wednesday.
Deputies said they responded to a crash on Oslo Road and 66th Avenue in Vero Beach, Florida, at about 10:45 a.m.
They said a car heading south on 66th Avenue turned in front of a septic tanker truck, causing a crash between the two and a flatbed truck heading the same direction.
The car caught fire and within seconds, the car and septic truck were engulfed in flames, trapping a woman inside the car.
Dashcam video showed Deputy Robert Sunker pulling up to the scene, running toward the blaze, and breaking the window of the car with his baton.
Heavy, black plumes of smoke were shooting from the car as the blaze continued.
The woman was trapped in the vehicle by her seat belt, steering wheel and airbag.
Sunkel was unable to easily pull her out; then Deputy Linda Nolan came to help.
Together, the deputies pulled the woman out of the burning vehicle.
"We are so proud of Deputies Sunkel and Nolan for their life saving efforts earlier this morning," Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar said in a post on the Indian River County Sheriff's Office Facebook page. "Video of the incident shows that despite danger to themselves, they continued to work to save this woman from her burning car."
Nolan sustained burns to her hand and was treated at the scene.
The woman in the car was airlifted to the hospital. Deputies do not know her condition.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
