In an early-morning news conference, police have released the identity of the man they said is responsible for Thursday's deadly shooting at a Louisiana theater shooting.
Police said the shooter was John Houser, a 59-year-old white man from Phenix City, Alabama, ABC News reported.
Police characterized him as a drifter who was staying at a local hotel and was estranged from his family.
He has no connection to Lafayette, police said.
That hotel has been searched.
Houser, police said, drove his 1995 Lincoln to the theater and parked it by an exit door with the intent of escaping. Gov. Bobby Jindal said that Houser was trying to escape when he noticed law enforcement, and returned to the theater where he shot and killed himself.
A 40 caliber handgun was recovered. Police believe it is the only weapon used. He had no motive that police have found.

Police said 13 rounds were fired.
They searched Houser's car and theater for any explosive devices. None were found and the theater has been deemed safe.
Police found wigs, glasses and other items for what they said were disguises that they said were Houser's.
Police said he was working alone.
Of the nine people wounded, one person is still in critical condition. Two were treated and released.
Police are asking for anyone with any information on Houser to call them at 337-291-8650.
