Three people are behind bars, accused of trading a little girl in exchange for a car.

Police said the trade plan started in November 2017, but the actual swap happened in 2018. The situation, however, recently came to light when the child, who is now 2 years old was taken to a North Carolina hospital, WFMY reported.

The little girl was having an allergic reaction, NBC News reported.

Staff there noticed bruising on a 2-year-old girl and alerted police and child protective services, WGHP reported.

Tina Chavis, who had taken the girl to the hospital, first said she was the girl's mother, and that she had adopted the child. But police said she could not produce any paperwork to prove the claims, WFMY reported.

The child was given to a family member for care at the time. As police investigated, they found out that the child's biological mother was Alice Leann Todd and that she gave the little girl to Chavis and her husband Vicencio Romero, in exchange for a car, a 1992 Plymouth Laser, police said, according to NBC News.

Chavis, Todd and Romero were in the Davidson County Jail on $50,000 bond each. Each are charged with the unlawful sale, surrender or purchase of a minor, NBC News reported.
