Michael McGregor Holt, the gunman in the Omni Austin Hotel Downtown who was killed after shooting a man to death, had filed for candidacy in the 2016 presidential race.
According to the Federal Election Commission, Holt, 35, filed a statement for candidacy in the 2016 election on June 9.
The FEC requires candidates to file documents with the commission if they raise or spend more than $5,000 in pursuit of winning the election, the FEC said. However, anyone can file a statement of candidacy even if they have not hit that $5,000 threshold, an FEC representative said.
Holt's name is listed among the 448 people so far that have filed a statement of candidacy.
Austin police believe Holt killed taxi driver Conrado Guadalupe Contreras, 60, after bringing a rifle into the lobby of the Omni Hotel early Sunday morning. Police officer Carlos Lopez shot and killed Holt after Holt pointed the rifle at police, Austin police said.
