The van was idling outside city hall when 18-year-old Marshawn Daniels jumped in. What he didn’t realize was, reporter Da Lin was sitting behind him working on a story about crime and police staffing.
Lin told KPIX he checked to see if Daniels was armed before yelling at him. The shocked thief jumped out of the van and tried to run.
He didn’t get far.
A security guard caught Daniels and held a gun on him until cops arrived.
"It's a sad moment where, at the center of leadership, w are challenged by safety," Oakland councilman Nick Gallo told SFGate.com.
Daniels was booked on charges of attempted auto theft but was released on his own recognizance.
A few hours later, Lin hit the air with his story.
