A school board in New Jersey took drastic measures Wednesday night after a third-grade teacher allowed students to write get well letters to convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal, NJ.com reported.
The school board for the Orange Preparatory Academy, in a unanimous decision, fired Marylin Zuniga, a first year teacher at Forest Street Elementary School.
Zuniga said her students asked her if they could write letters to Abu-Jamal after she told them he was ill. She later tweeted that the letters had been delivered.
Abu-Jamal is serving a life sentence for killing Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981. He's hospitalized with complications from diabetes.
At first, Zuniga was suspended for the letters, as NJ.com reported last month.
Zuniga has received support from civil rights activists and other teachers for teaching compassion to her students, NJ.com reported.
She's also received criticism from parents and police.
