A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting that left two Palm Springs, California, police officers dead and another injured, Fox News reports.
The Desert Sun reports that John Felix, 26, was taken into custody early Sunday after a 12-hour police standoff. Felix has been charged with two counts of murder of a peace officer.
The Palm Springs Police Department tweeted that it will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. PT to discuss the arrest.
Officers Lesley Zerebny and Jose Gilbert "Gil" Vega were killed Saturday during the shootout during a call investigating a family disturbance, according to The Desert Sun. Vega was a 35-year veteran who was planning to retire in December. Zerebny is the mother of a 4-month-old and had been on the force about a year. The third officer, who has not been named, is alert and talking with investigators, according to KNBC.
"Today, Palm Springs lost two brave officers," Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes said at a news conference, according to The Desert Sun. "I am awake in a nightmare right now."
The shooting occurred around 1 p.m. PT, according to KMIR.
