Four high school students were hospitalized after eating drug-laced gummy candies, authorities said.
Gulfport Police Chief Robert Vincent said Monday that presumptive tests showed that the drug was likely THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.
A student brought the candies to school and passed them around to other students, according to investigators.
Seven students ate the candies, and four were taken to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital as a precaution, said Lisa Wolf, a spokeswoman for Pinellas County Schools. Parents of the students who were taken to the hospital were notified, Wolf said. The students have been released from the hospital.
The students ate the drug-laden gummy worms at lunch, according to investigators. Soon afterward, two of the students went to Boca Ciega High School's clinic complaining of feeling ill, according to investigators.
"Apparently the students that consumed the laced gummies were aware that they would receive a 'high' from ingesting them," Sgt. Thomas Woodman, a spokesman for Gulfport police, said in a release.
The investigation is continuing and criminal charges are pending.
