U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo. joined the 2020 race for the White House on Thursday when he announced his plans to run for the Democratic nomination.
The announcement came about one month after Bennet, 54, revealed he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer during a routine physical, NPR reported. Bennet underwent surgery last month and has since been declared cancer free.
Bennet, a former head of Denver Public Schools who has carved out a reputation as a policy-oriented moderate, made his announcement Thursday on CBS' "CBS This Morning."
He joins a crowded field of presidential hopefuls challenging President Donald Trump in 2020, including former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld is also running to challenge Trump for the 2020 Republican presidential nomination.
