According to TMZ, multiple buyers were locked in a bidding war for the item, and Zimmerman must verify the winner before the sale is finalized.

The amount of the highest bid is unclear, but multiple news outlets reported that the gun sold for more than $120,000.

The auction went live Tuesday morning with a starting bid of $100,000 or a "buy it now" price of $500,000.

United Gun Group owner Todd Underwood previously said the group wouldn't interfere with sales posted on its site as long as the site's members comply with the Constitution and the law.

"We are not going to dictate morality to our individuals," he said.

Following the close of the sale, Zimmerman posted this message on his website:

"Fellow Patriots,

"First and foremost, I would like to thank and give the glory to God for a successful auction that has raised funds for several worthy causes. I would like to thank Todd Underwood and UnitedGunGroup.com for their moral fortitude in hosting my firearm auction. I would also like to thank all members of UnitedGunGroup for their support and words of encouragement. I also appreciate the many former members of GunBroker AKA GunJoker.com for terminating their relationship with the Nazi loving, (go to their website and search "Nazi") liberal, liars at Gunbroker.com. At this time, the auction with United Gun Group is closed. The process of notifying the winning bidder will begin immediately. The winning bidder will ultimately decide if they want their information to be maintained in confidentiality and they are assured that I will withhold their identity from all media and private parties. Please visit this page GMZ1776.com or email GMZfirearm@gmail.com for updates and notifications of future auction items."

The weapon was originally listed for sale May 11 at GunBroker.com but was pulled from the site. Zimmerman later listed the gun on UnitedGunGroup.com, where fake bidders drove the price of the item up to more than $60 million. Zimmerman removed the listing on Saturday.

The auction listing described the gun as a piece of "American history" and included photos from Zimmerman's 2013 second-degree murder trial.

Zimmerman previously told the Daily Beast he wants to use the money from the gun sale to fight the Black Lives Matter movement.

"I would take that money, and I would make sure that every law enforcement officer and every single civilian who is affected by the Black Lives Matter fraudulent, violent campaign -- those officers, those civilians, their entire families -- were made wealthy beyond their wildest imaginations," he said.

The Trayvon Martin Foundation declined to comment on the sale of the gun.
