A spacious house with waterfront views of the Ohio River is up for sale, the asking price? $199 and a convincing essay.
Persuade the homeowners why you should own the 4,200 square foot, Indiana "River House" and its multiple jetted tubs, fireplace, wrap-around deck and vaulted ceilings could be yours.
The inspirational essay should be 200 words or less and creatively follow the topic. It will be judged by a panel from Hanover College.
The Indiana homeowners saw stories about others in Maine and Alabama offering homes in exchange for essays and decided to do something similar.
"We thought, why not offer this opportunity to someone," homeowner Rhonda Pennington wrote on the River House Contest website.
So they scrapped the conventional sale of the cedar home with panoramic riverfront views and started the contest.
Pennington is not sure how many entries have been received but hopes to reach 2,000 before the contest ends Sept. 29. Visitors from four states went to an open house Sept. 1, according to a contest tweet.
"There are many hardworking, talented people that could benefit from this opportunity. We have been very fortunate to have had opportunities and would like to give someone else an opportunity," Pennington wrote.
