A poodle is now in better hands after deputies said the dog was thrown out of a moving car by its owner on Christmas Eve.

Witnesses said Mary Radford, 69, drove through an intersection on Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach, opened her door and threw the miniature poodle, named Minnie, out of the car.

Deputies said the dog tumbled into the road and then ran toward a parking lot.

Three good Samaritans stopped to help Minnie while a Volusia County sheriff’s captain, who witnessed the incident, followed Radford’s car.

Radford told the deputy the dog must have fallen out of the car.

She was charged with animal cruelty and taken to jail.

Minnie, although very shaken, appeared uninjured and was taken to the local Humane Society.
