After Teresa Velez poured gasoline on her friend and attempted to set him on fire, she realized she had one problem: Her lighter didn't work, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office report.
On April 20, Velez was hosting a part at her home on Neptune Street, just east of South Military Trail and south of Gun Club Road, when Velez and a man at the party got into an argument, deputies said. Velez said she tried to set him on fire “because he was evil” and she wanted him to leave, according to the report.
The man told deputies he was scared for his life because he thought she would light him on fire. Velez said the only reason she didn’t was because her lighter wasn’t working, according to the report.
It is unclear from the report why she was arrested almost three months after the incident.
Velez, 21, faces charges of aggravated assault and remains in the Palm Beach County Jail without bail until a mental health evaluation is complete, according to jail records.
In 2013, Velez was arrested on robbery charges, according to county records.
