The incident happened just after 10 a.m. Tuesday outside a home near Sugar Land, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said. The girl's father started the car to run the air conditioning and accidentally put it into reverse, KTRK-TV reported. The car struck his 3-year-old daughter.

The father and emergency responders tried to administer CPR to the girl, but couldn’t revive her. She died at the scene.

Deputies initially said the father’s 4-year-old daughter accidentally bumped the car’s gear shift, causing it to go into reverse; but deputies later corrected that statement.

Investigators are calling the death an accident.
