Police say a man abandoned two toddlers at a St. Louis day care after taking them to the wrong location.

KTVI reported that a 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl are safely with their grandmother after a man dropped them off at Kingdom Kare Early Learning Center in St. Louis, according to local authorities.

The day care operators told KTVI that the children appeared to be well taken care of, but they never saw them before Tuesday.

The man, later identified as the boyfriend of the children's mother, insisted he was at the right day care and left the children there for most of the day, according to the facility employees.

Staff contacted police, who were looking for the children's parents for hours, KTVI reported.

By late Tuesday, police confirmed the children's mother was at the hospital for a procedure and her boyfriend was the person who dropped them off. Police were ultimately able to get in contact with the children's grandmother, and they went home with her.
