Multiple officers with the Saint Paul Police Department have been reported as injured at a protest in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Demonstrators in St. Paul began protesting Saturday in response to recent deaths associated with police encounters and police brutality.
Protests began at the Minnesota Governor's Residence in St. Paul.
Philando Castile died Wednesday in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, after being pulled over during a traffic stop and shot by a police officer.
The Star Tribune reported that as the demonstration continued protesters took to Interstate 94 and officers began to redirect traffic from there around 7 p.m.
Participants in the protest included Black Lives Matter, an organization that works to raise awareness of and stop police brutality.
The move led the interstate to be closed and increased tensions between police and protesters.
KMSP reported that, according to police, protesters armed themselves with rebar from a nearby construction site, throwing rebar, liquids, a glass bottle, and other unidentified objects at officers, injuring five.
St. Paul police spokesman Steve Linders said police were taking people into custody around 11:45 p.m.
Police used tear gas, flash bombs and pepper spray in attempt to disperse crowds.
Police also reported that a Molotov cocktail was thrown at them, but it was unclear if there were any injuries from that.
Police said there were still protesters throwing rocks at them as they tried to clear the freeway of remaining protesters.
KARE reported that most of I-94 is cleared, but there are still protestors at the Governor's mansion.
