Two LAPD officers have made nationwide headlines and sparked a trend of positive interaction between police and the public.

A 14-year-old in Los Angeles was on the way to his high school orientation with his mother when she flagged the officers for help.

"I saw the kid waving at me and the mother asked if I could help with his tie through her car window," Officer Jonathan Maldonado said to a Los Angeles TV station.

The officer recalled how the mother said she had been looking at YouTube videos that morning trying to learn how to tie her son's tie but was having no luck. Her son was embarrassed about having to attend the orientation without having his tie done, the mother posted on Facebook.

That's when the opportunity to implement the term "relationship policing" arose, the division's captain, Martin A. Baeza, posted on Twitter.

"We're here to help the community we serve," Maldonado said. "Sometimes people are just scared to ask." The officer also said he was thankful to make an impact in their lives.

"Our story continues," Capt. Baeza posted on Twitter Tuesday. The officers shared their ties with the younger siblings of they boy they helped, the police captain said in a tweet included a picture of the officers with the kids.
