Parents upset after mealworms found in school lunch

Orange County Public Schools passed a health inspection a day after a child discovered a mealworm in his school lunch.
 
Officials recalled a certain type of rice from each school in the district after the Killarney Elementary School student found a cooked mealworm in the rice. More mealworms were found in uncooked rice.
 
The school district hasn't publicly identified the vendor that supplied the rice because it said it wants to give the vendor time to investigate how the mealworms ended up in the rice.
 
The Department of Agriculture said mealworms, the larval form of the mealworm beetle, are edible, but that isn't easing the concerns of some parents.
 
"What else is it in?" parent Shauna Jackson said. "Where are they storing it?"
 
Jackson said she'll start sending her child to school with a packed lunch from now on.
 
The school's principal said the district consulted with a statewide expert who believes the worms aren't toxic if ingested.
