Oprah tears up sharing her favorite Christmas memory

A video posted online shows 2003 clip of Oprah sharing her all-time favorite memory.

She was 12 years old, and her mother told her that they wouldn’t be celebrating Christmas that year, because they simply didn’t have enough money.

Oprah Winfrey was 12 years old when her mother said they couldn't afford to celebrate Christmas.

She said that’s when she knew that Santa Claus wasn’t real. But what worried her most was thinking she’d have to tell her friends that she didn’t get anything for Christmas.

Then, some nuns came to her home, armed with gifts and food. They gave her a doll and saved Christmas.

She said that day was special because, somebody remembered.

That feeling inspired her to take a trip to Africa and give personal gifts to more than 50,000 children and teens. Gifts including dolls, radios, soccer balls, clothes and shoes were distributed.

She said she wanted each child to feel like they mattered enough to be remembered.

“I was my mission to do for them what the nuns had done for me,” said Oprah.
