Parents at Wapakoneta Middle School in Auglaize County have been given the option to pull their children from a lesson on Islam.
The school's superintendent told Buzzfeed that due to a growing number of "anti-Muslim incidents," seventh graders may opt out of a "small part of the state's social studies curriculum."
The lesson is described as “achievements in medicine, science, mathematics, and geography by the Islamic civilization that dominated the Mediterranean after the decline of the Roman Empire.”
Superintendent Keith Horner said the school district does not recommend that students opt out, but they understand some topics are sensitive to both students and parents.
