Police in a North Carolina town said an 8-year-old boy who fell through ice in a pond Sunday afternoon died.
The Rowan County Sheriff's Office said Salisbury police responded to a drowning call at City Park Lake.
The fire department said the boy fell through the ice.
After the fire department rescued him, he was turned over to Emergency Medical Services, who attempted to resuscitate him.
The boy was taken to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center for further medical treatment.
Officials did not say if the child was being supervised.
People in the area at the time told WSOC-TV Channel 9 they came down shortly after. One woman who did not want to be identified said she saw crews trying to locate the boy underwater for around 10 minutes.
"I just don't understand, 8 years old. I mean, I know kids are going to play and they're going to do stuff but honestly 8 is awful young to be playing by themselves," she said.
