Officials in France consider banning too-thin models

March 17, 2015

French officials are pushing for a big change in the fashion capital of the world, according to HuffPoLive.  A new bill would keep models who are "too thin" off of runways.

So what is too thin? Models with a body mass index (BMI) of under 18 would be banned from fashion shows. The proposed law would be enforced by regular weight checks.

A person with a BMI of 18 weighs about 120 lbs. and is about 5-feet-7-inches tall.

The lawmaker pushing for the bill says models, staffers and agencies in the fashion industry would be fined or even jailed if they didn't adhere to the proposed regulations.

HuffPoLive reports that officials expect the government to back the deal.

Countries like Italy, Israel and Spain have similar laws regulating model weight in advertising campaigns.
