An Alabama police investigator is recovering and a suspect is dead after police say the man walked onto an active crime scene Wednesday afternoon and opened fire.

Anniston detectives returned fire and killed the shooter, identified Thursday as Jamee Almarez, 27, of Anniston, according to AL.com. It was not immediately clear if Almarez is suspected in the initial homicide the officers were investigating.

Anniston police officials said that officers responded around 3 p.m. to a report of an unconscious woman lying next to a vehicle in the Blue Mountain area of Anniston, AL.com reported. There they found Candice Weeks, 36, dead of a gunshot wound.

Police Chief Shane Denham said that investigators were about an hour into processing the crime scene when Almarez showed up and walked onto the scene.

“One of my investigators tried to stop him,” Denham said during a news conference Wednesday at the scene. “At that time, he raised his shirt, pulled out a gun and shot one of my investigators point-blank in the (abdomen).”

Because of the angle, the bullet only grazed the officer, Denham said.

“He’s very fortunate,” the chief said. “The good Lord was looking out for him.”

Five of the department’s investigators, including the one who was shot, fired back at Almarez.

The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting, even as Anniston police investigators probed Weeks’ death.

No more details had been released as of noon Thursday.
