Police Chief Shane Denham said that investigators were about an hour into processing the crime scene when Almarez showed up and walked onto the scene.

“One of my investigators tried to stop him,” Denham said during a news conference Wednesday at the scene. “At that time, he raised his shirt, pulled out a gun and shot one of my investigators point-blank in the (abdomen).”

Because of the angle, the bullet only grazed the officer, Denham said.

Five of the department’s investigators, including the one who was shot, fired back at Almarez.

The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting, even as Anniston police investigators probed Weeks’ death.
