Carol Schuman's tradition of donating toys to homeless children around New York City underwent a major overhaul this year.
Taking a stroll in the city's West Village, the philanthropist saw a Hudson Party Store full of toys, stuffed animals and school supplies was going up for rent and had an idea.
"When I saw this toy store, I just realized I could do it on a grander scale," Schuman said to NY1 about how she annually buys birthday gifts for foster kids in Brooklyn.
So she contacted the store owner, and after some negotiating, bought the store's entire inventory to donate to city's Department of Homeless Services.
"This is the first time anybody ever bought out an entire store and donated to the children of shelters," Antonio Rodriquez, director of special events at DHS, said to NY1.
A lot of foster kids get used presents for the holidays and have never experienced the joy of opening a toy that was purchased just for them, Schuman said. That's why "children is always my focus."
