The Navy may have removed Capt. John Banigan from command of the guided missile cruiser Lake Erie due to "a bad command climate survey."
Or it could have been because of a goat named Master Chief Charlie.
The Navy Times reports the ship recently was reassigned from Hawaii to San Diego. Banigan allowed Charlie to make the trip, violating California Department of Food and Agriculture laws governing the transport of livestock into the U.S.
KGTV reports Charlie acted as the ship's mascot, appearing at events and having his picture taken with Navy brass.
Capt. Banigan is now working a desk job. Master Chief Charlie has been taken off the ship, and now has hiw own Twitter account.
The Navy has long used the goat as a mascot. It even published "A Brief Illustrated History of the Navy Goat" in 2014.
