In what is being described as a horrific case of animal abuse, a female dog and her puppy were placed in sandbags and thrown from a moving vehicle in California.
The 4- to 6-week old puppy died at the scene.
The female dog, believed to be a 6-year-old Miniature Pinscher, survived the incident and chewed her way out of the bag. Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter officials who arrived on the scene said that while the dog was fearful, she refused to leave the body of her puppy. Once officers were able to secure her in the animal control van, she became frantic, scratching and crying until the puppy’s body was placed next to her.
A necropsy showed that the puppy died from head trauma.
Officials are actively seeking a suspect in the case.
