Volkswagen is again brushing off the idea for a next generation Microbus, with this retro version running on electric power.
Heinz-Jakob Neusser, a member of the board of management for the automaker's development division, told Autoblog the idea is just a concept and did not indicate when it would be released.
He did say the concept would take design cues from the classic vehicle's look. It also would have an electric engine powering the front wheels.
"The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very short," Neusser told Autoblog.
The company has floated a retro concept based on the Microbus over the years.
In 2001, it released a Microbus concept. It never saw production. About 10 years later Volkswagen displayed the Bulli, it also was never built.
In January, Volkswagen wowed crowds at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show with its BUDD-e, an electric vehicle which was supposedly a successor to the Microbus. It is expected to go into production in 2018, according to Autocar.
"The original Microbus was the embodiment of peace, hope and happiness, an apartment on wheels," Herbert Diess, who's in charge of Volkswagen, told Autocar. "The future belongs to cars that make everyone happy. We want to create a new experience of mobility."
