A Michigan man is accused of smashing his truck into a gas station and then removing his license plate and fleeing the scene on foot, police said.
William David Edmonds, 24, of Groveland Township, was arrested at his home 13 hours after the incident early Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reported. He was charged with reckless driving and failing to report an accident, the newspaper reported.
According to a police report, a clerk at a Brandon Township BP station told authorities Edmonds bought a beer around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, opened it and climbed into his vehicle, WXYZ reported.
The truck was located near the gasoline pumps. According to the police report, Edmonds "accelerated at a high rate of speed in the parking lot," turned 180 degrees and struck a gas pump island before driving into the building, WXYZ reported.
Edmonds then took the license tag off his truck and walked away, an action that was caught on a surveillance camera, the Free Press reported. According to the police report, Edmonds told authorities he fled because he was scared, the newspaper reported.
