The Los Angeles City Council has given preliminary approval to an ordinance to boost the minimum wage from $9 to $15 an hour by 2020 for as many as 800,000 workers.

The plan now goes to the city attorney’s office before it returns to the council for a final vote and then goes to the mayor for a signature.

Once enacted, the law is expected to call for the first wage boost — from $9 to $10.50 an hour — in July of next year.

The citywide legislation is not a total surprise; the base pay for hotel workers in Los Angeles has already been raised to $15.37 an hour. But the new law will make Los Angeles the largest city in the country to adopt a major minimum-wage increase.

Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle have all enacted similar laws increasing the minimum wage.
