A Kansas woman’s desperate attempts to retrieve her World Series tickets from a house fire nearly resulted in her arrest. But the story got weirder when Hall-of-Famer George Brett randomly showed up on the scene.
Christine Maurer, of Mission Hills, called the fire department Tuesday morning after smelling smoke in her house.
"I ran in and got my purse and they told me I couldn't come back in and I remembered about the tickets," Maurer told Kansas City TV station WDAF.
Maurer’s favorite team, the Kansas City Royals, is making its first World Series appearance in 29 years. She attempted to enter the house and retrieve her tickets.
“(The firefighters) said if you go back in there, we are going to call the police,” Maurer told WDAF. “So I said … go get my tickets because my kids have just driven in from South Dakota to go to the game.”
Fire Chief Tony Lopez told WDAF that’s when he understood why Maurer was so desperate to get her tickets. With help from Maurer, Lopez directed one of his firefighters to go and save the tickets.
“Once I had them in my hand, didn’t let go of them,” Maurer told WDAF.
The morning took another bizarre twist when George Brett, a retired Royals legend, and member of the 1985 championship team, suddenly appeared on the scene.
“George Brett … walked up and it looked like he was out exercising, walking the dog,” Lopez said.
A stunned Maurer talked with Brett, who took photos with her and firefighters.
“I went ‘Oh my gosh! George, I’ve just gotten my tickets,’ and he said ‘are they better than mine?’ “ Maurer told WDAF.
WDAF reports the fire was due to an overheated can light and that damage to the house was minimal
