Former NBA player and Georgia Tech standout Javaris Crittenton pleaded guilty to the 2011 murder of a mother of four in court Wednesday.
Crittenton, an alleged gang member, was connected to the shooting death of Atlanta mother Julian Jones. Prosecutors claimed Crittenton was aiming for the man who allegedly robbed him days earlier.
Douglas Gamble, Crittenton's cousin, was in the car at the time of the shooting and was sentenced to three years in custody.
In court Wednesday, Crittenton made a tearful apology to the family. He told them he wishes he could change places with Jones. He called it a horrible accident.
Crittenton accepted a 23-year sentence as part of the deal.
He was later released from jail on bond, but re-arrested during a drug sting in January 2014. He remained Tuesday night in the Fulton County jail. Gamble is out on bond, booking records showed.
Crittenton helped lead Georgia Tech to a 20-12 record and a berth in the NCAA tournament in 2007 as a freshman. Crittenton played for the Lakers, Grizzlies and Wizards from 2007 to 2009.
