Some parents are upset that a transgender girl who identifies as a boy uses the boy’s restroom at Vanguard High School.

The superintendent of Marion County Schools said its district does not discriminate against anyone, so the superintendent will continue to allow the student to use the boy’s restroom.

District leaders said this all began when the student and his mother met with the principal to discuss the teen using a different restroom.

"She agreed to use the gender neutral facility that we offered to her,” George Tomyn, superintendent of Marion County Schools, said.

Tomyn told WFTV the student later changed his mind about using the gender neutral facility.

"I guess she decided that was discriminatory against her,” said Tomyn.

After the school district leaders talked to their attorneys, the district allowed the teen to use the boy’s restroom.

Some told WFTV the district did the right thing and students should be able to use whichever bathroom they want.

"It’s sad and it shouldn't be that way. Whether they are born a girl and want to be a boy, or born a boy and want to be a girl, it doesn't matter that's their choice.  People should just get over it,” said one student.

Another student disagreed saying, "I feel like she shouldn't be able to, she was born a female."
