A Florida man is facing charges for impersonating a naval officer and trying to get perks in the process.
Lloyd Mitchell was arrested and charged with fraud Wednesday, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. Mitchell claimed he was given the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star among other decorations, according to investigators.
But it turns out he didn’t serve in the Navy as a former admiral or anywhere else in the military.
Mitchell’s mug shot can be found in the St. Johns County Jail’s records. But investigators say there are no pictures of him in any military records, even though the 65-year-old allegedly claimed he had the paperwork to prove he is a retired admiral.
The guise upsets and disgusts some veterans.
“It’s disgracing the uniform and the military and that goes to all branches,” said Charles Miller, a 30-year member of the Navy and three-time Purple Heart recipient. “I think they are pretty low. If they don’t want to serve their country, maybe they can do more by leaving it."
Investigators arrested Mitchell for fraud and perjury at his home Wednesday. Reporters knocked on his front door and a woman living inside said in colorful language to leave.
Detectives say it all started last month with an anonymous tip that Mitchell was posing as a retired admiral.
In January, officials said he submitted a military discharge to get veteran status on his driver's license. But military investigators quickly found out it was all a sham. There’s no record of Mitchell serving.
