A Powhatan County, Va. family is now in mourning after an incident at Petco ended with their dog dying.

According to WTVR-TVAllison Marks dropped Colby, a two-year-old golden retriever, off at Petco for a routine grooming. The dog was killed when it was left in the drying cage by a groomer. Relatives said Colby had no health problems.

According to Marks, she decided to call the store after she had not heard back after a few hours. She was then told to meet the store's assistant manager at the local animal hospital where she was told that Colby had been left in the heated drying cage for far too long.
"Your groomer had to go because she had a graduation to go to,” Marks said the assistant manager told her.
The veterinarian told her that Colby had likely died of a heat stroke and that an hour after the dog's death, his internal tempearture was still registered at more than 105 degrees. Marks said that she was reassured by the Petco corporate office that the drying cages cut off after 15 minutes.
Petco made an official statement on Sunday afternoon, saying that “all of us at Petco are heartbroken by Colby’s passing. The health and safety of pets is always our top priority and we take full responsibility for all animals under our care. We are taking immediate action to investigate and understand the situation. Our thoughts are with Colby’s family at this difficult time.”
